Charity is very important in the eyes of Heaven. Throughout the Bible we see how
God blesses those for whom the act of charity and the giving of tithes is part
of their way of life.
In Genesis (chapter 28:22), in the story of Jacob's dream, we see how Jacob
promises that of whatever God gives him, he will give a tenth back to God.
Further on we see how Jacob became stronger and very rich as a result of his
giving of tithes and acts of charity. God blessed him and made him fruitful and
increased his numbers until he became a community of people.
In Deuteronomy (chapter 26:1-12) the Bible teaches us that it is forbidden to
shut our hands and hearts to the poor. We must give him what he lacks and as a
result God promises to send blessings upon the one who fulfills this
commandment. The prophet Isaiah (chapter 58) also teaches about the importance
of charity and tells us that we must share our bread with the hungry and never
ignore the poor. Also in this chapter God promises that if we follow His
commandment then will He keep His promise - a promise which says "Then shall
your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily;
your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rear
guard." (Is.58:8) In the New Testament, Jesus also preached about the
importance of charity and promised blessings and salvation to the one who gives
to charity.
Have we done justice today? Have we already given charity to the hungry this
week? Have we given to the child who has no clothes? What are we waiting for?
The Lord knows if we have or have not given to charity; the Lord knows how much
we can really give and He waits for us.
The act of charity is a small thing
which may brighten the whole life of an hungry child or of the one who is ill;
our act of charity means hope for unfortunate mothers in Israel whose hands have
no blankets to cover their child in winter. Can we stay indifferent? There are
more than one million hungry children in Israel today. How can you stay
indifferent? If we act for the good of the people in Israel, God will bless us.
This is what God promised in the Bible - and when God promises, He always
keeps His promise.
Our manifold activity in Israel brought a wave of requests from good people and
various organizations wanting to give charity to their fellowmen. We, therefore
establish an international support center in Jerusalem to help everyone,
anyone, asking for help, no matter from where they might come; a center where
families in need would find a sympathetic ear and a helping hand giving them
hope and a center to encourage peace and love among different people and
religions; a center that would be a beacon to guide, by its works, those who
needed help and truly wanted love and brotherhood, and together truly wanted to
worship and praise the Lord; a center that would be a real and serious answer
for donors looking to see their contributions being used for genuine needs in
Israel.
What touches the heart more than the face of a hungry child crying for help?
What is more painful to see than a weeping mother who cannot feed or cover her
child? Which nice slogan will help them? Which?
Only true support and help from the heart can alleviate their pain and give them
hope and life.
